As we prepare for our trip to the zoo next week, we've started making our Zoo Books. This was a great opportunity to practice writing as well as revisiting the roles of author and illustrator- both of which they will be for this book!
We are getting excited for Community Day on Saturday! We'll be here from 9:30-2:30, and while ECE families are welcome to help out with all of the projects during the day, we are looking for extra help for Ms. Miller, our amazing art teacher.
Ms. Miller will be creating an art piece similar to the picture below for the space outside the Middle School front door. On Saturday that's where you can find her! If you have extra fabric scraps to contribute, please bring them! Our Spring Demonstration Day is coming up! As we have been learning about how plants grow, we'd love to invite parents to join us in planting flower seeds.
Date: Friday, May 5th Time: 10:00-11:00 Where: ECE Classroom/ Playground (weather dependent!) *If you are not able to attend, your child will still have the opportunity to plant seeds to bring home.* We've been learning about all the things that plants need to grow- sunshine, water, and soil. Today Mr. Potter let us know that he found out that the sprinklers (which will be watering our garden) haven't been turned on yet- and we would need to help out until then. We're excited to plant Marigolds with Mr. Potter on our next garden day!
While yesterday we focused on drawing a garden, today the focus was on planting a garden. Mr. Potter came by and helped us plant potatoes in the ECE raised bed for next year's students to harvest in the fall- just like we did!
Even if the weather begs to differ, we're excited to begin celebrating Spring! As you may have noticed, our snowflakes have come down from the windows. Today, Ms. Miller helped us get our new "window garden" started! Although we will have materials available to students in the studio in upcoming days and weeks to create more flowers, the more the merrier! If you would like to create flowers as a family for our windows, we will have (flattened) coffee filters available at pick up and drop off- just ask!
After Spring Break, ECE will begin our unit on Advocacy. As a class, we will discuss what it means to advocate, who and what are things that are important to advocate for, and how we can all be advocates for ourselves and things that are important to us.
We introduced this new word last week and talked about Advocating again today when Ms. Sydney told the class about her trip to the Colorado Capitol yesterday. If you are interested in learning about the current children's issues being debated right now, more information can be found here. To see a summary of 2017 legislation that's under consideration that affect children, here is a good place to start. One more exciting thing that Ms. Sydney learned? You can text your zip code to 520-200-2223 to get a list of your representatives- and their phone numbers. One of the most exciting events of the year here at Denver Green School is Community Day. This is a day the whole school community comes together to get to have fun and help beautify Denver Green School.
When: Saturday, April 22nd Schedule: 8:30-9:30 7th Grade Fun Run in DGS Parking Lot (open to all families!) 9:30-11:30 Community Clean Up in the Farm and Garden 11:30-2:30 Lunch for sale, Games & Activities ECE Families will be helping Ms. Miller with art projects- more information to come after Spring Break. Mrs. Herman, one of the kindergarten teachers, is due to have a baby in May and the ECE students are very excited. As her baby shower is coming up, we asked the students to help give her some advice. We explained this is her first baby and many of them have babies at home. What does she need to know? The class was also excited to know that the baby doesn't have a name yet. They quickly came up with a list of their own ideas:
We look forward to finding out if Mrs. Herman uses any of our names! |
