As adults, we don't often view the presence of a puddle "lucky." But if you're a 4 or 5 year old, a puddle can be a very lucky occasion (When paired with a nice, warm day). This week, with all the snow melting, we were lucky enough to have a rather large puddle on the ECE playground. We decided to view the puzzle as an opportunity rather than an obstacle to keep the children away from and didn't stop the students from exploring our new water feature.
We watched the students experiment with what objects float and what objects sink, with how slippery the ice is with water on it, and explore ideas around why the water was colder in some parts of the puddle than others.
We also learned that a nap time is not long enough for all of our shoes and socks to dry (or even some of the bottoms of our pants).
