Every day, all students at Denver Green School do yoga. Yoga not only gets our bodies moving, but also helps us focus, calm down our breathing, and give us something to work on improving each day. (More benefits of yoga for kids can be found here.)

Each year one of our very favorite measures of growth is a self portrait. We ask students to draw self portraits multiple times each year- these are a great way for teachers, children, and parents to see how much children have grown over the year. Today, we began drawing our beginning-of-the-year portraits.
Every other Thursday while the weather is nice, Mr. Potter (one of the 6th grade teachers) comes in to work with our class in the garden. Today, everyone got a chance to walk to the big garden behind the school and then look at the little ECE garden on our playground. We got a chance to smell and taste fennel seeds, pick and eat an apple off a small apple tree, and smell green onions growing in our own garden. We can't wait to keep exploring our garden! Mr. Potter will be helping us harvest potatoes in coming weeks. Interesting in helping Mr. Potter on these days? Email him at [email protected].
Two very exciting things happened today. First, we re-read The Selfish Crocodile, a great book about sharing commons (things and spaces that belong to everyone). This book has a crocodile who has a toothache caused by a broken tooth. Second, Caely brought in a part of a cow jawbone (with teeth!) to share with the class. While looking at the bone in the science center, some children noticed it had a broken tooth. We got out the book to compare it to the picture- and determined that the cow probably had a toothache.
"As soon as children find something that interests them they lose their instability and learn to concentrate." -Dr. Maria Montessori Every day, Monday-Thursday, we will rotate through Specials. Today was our first day of Art with Ms. Miller. She came in and read us her favorite story about making art (The Day the Crayons Quit) and then had all the students decorate name tags to use when she comes in to our room.
Another great first day! We played outside, explored the centers inside, and got to know one another. We can't wait until Monday when we have all of the students here for our first full day! We were so excited for half the students to start today! We had a lot of fun exploring the playground, getting to know each other, eating snack, and playing in centers. Below are some pictures of our day. Good Morning!
We are so excited to be back and planning for what I'm sure will be a wonderful school year! I hope you have received the paperwork sent in May- if not, it is linked here for you. Registration is at DGS next week- in fact, our school calendar can be found here if you scroll to the bottom of the page. More information will come in the next few weeks, but if you are curious about our staggered start, the information is below. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Staggered Start Information (First Day of School) To help everyone ease into the school year, ECE begins with a staggered start. This means: during the first two days of school (Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th) your child will attend only ONE day from 8:00am-12:00pm. Please see the list below to determine which day your child will attend. (You will be responsible for finding care for the afternoon and the day your child is not attending. No other childcare will be available at DGS.) (The list has been removed) Beginning on Monday, August 22nd we will begin our standard schedule for all students. At 12:00, on your child’s first day, you will be asked to stay for a 30 minute information session about ECE. Thanks for checking the website! This is a great place to get information about our classroom, and upcoming events. |
