It's important that you read to your child every day- but it's also important to encourage them to read to you! Favorite books and books without words are a great place to start.
Every Friday, we pair the students and have them take turns reading to each other. This is a great time for the students to work on many different skills: building confidence, speaking in whole sentences, recalling and retelling different stories and different books, taking turns, beginning to match words on the page to spoken words, as well as begin to sound out more familiar words. It's important that you read to your child every day- but it's also important to encourage them to read to you! Favorite books and books without words are a great place to start.

This is a great article from NAEYC (the National Association for the Education of Young Children) about Big Jobs children can help with at home.
What big jobs does your child help with? Today we asked the class what we think we will see when we visit the pizza parlor next week. Below is the list of our ideas.
What else do you think we may see? We are excited to visit the Garlic Knot next week and see how many of these things we can find! We are excited to announce our first off-site excursion of the year! We will be visiting the Garlic Knot on Colorado Blvd on Thursday, February 4th.
We will learn:
And we will be making our own pizzas to eat for lunch! Permission slips will be sent home today, please sign and return as soon as possible. (This excursion is paid for by your student activity fees.) Today we introduced "Play Plans" to the class. A play plan is an opportunity for each student to draw a picture of what they will be doing at choice time as well as write that plan in a sentence. We began by introducing the template to the students. We then practiced writing our names (on the name line!) and drawing a picture of ourselves in the center that we chose to work in. In coming weeks, we will begin helping the students use their letter sounds to begin writing their own plans.
Play plans can be a helpful way to begin a conversation with your child if they can't remember what they did at school that day. You can ask, "What was your play plan?" We got to play bingo today! Shape and Color bingo is a great way to solidify knowledge about shapes and colors in a fun and educational way.
When we returned to school yesterday, the children were excited to find lots of new materials in our centers. We'll be spotlighting each new center in weeks to come, but until then, here is a quick glimpse into how we've explored then new materials over the past two days. |
